7-part Course: Podcasting & Audio Storytelling in Utrecht (English language)

Language: English. Location: Parnassos Cultuurcentrum Utrecht.

This course is accessible both for (former) students of Utrecht University and the general public.

There’s an old saying that radio is the most visual medium. In this course, you’ll discover just how true that is. Armed with a microphone, you’ll learn to portray people, places, and even objects through sound. Along the way, you’ll explore the basics of audio editing, learn how to write for radio and podcasts, and experiment with different storytelling forms. Step by step, you’ll develop the tools to create compelling and vividly “visual” audio portraits.

Course approach

This is a playful, hands-on course where you’ll create a series of short audio stories. Making, experimenting, and even failing are part of the process. While you’ll learn basic recording and editing skills, technique is not the main focus. Instead, the course is framed as an artistic exploration, so it’s not aimed at producing corporate or commercial podcasts. You’ll also need to set aside some time each week for recording and editing, though you’re free to decide how much time you invest. The course ends with a shared listening session.

What you’ll learn

  • How to conduct portrait-style interviews
  • Writing for audio: how rhythm, timing, and imagination shape storytelling
  • Working with voice-over, music, and ambient sound as narrative tools
  • Basic audio editing skills

Please note: we work with Reaper as our (free) audio editing software. Bring your own laptop and, if possible, headphones. If you have your own recording device (such as a Zoom or Tascam), feel free to bring that as well.
